It was a week of political drama in Japan, a new constitution for Nepal and drought in Indonesia.

Chaos erupted in Japan’s parliament and thousands of protesters rallied in the streets as emotions ran high over a series of contentious security bills to loosen constitutional constraints on the country’s military.

The bills ended up passing the upper house early Saturday, allowing Japan to take part in combat even when the country was not under direct attack. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe argues the change is needed for Japan to cope with increasing security threats, but many Japanese believe it violates the constitution and puts the country at risk of becoming embroiled in U.S.-led wars.

In other images from around Asia last week, Indonesia’ densely populated island of Java was hit by drought, forcing villagers to talk long distances to fetch water, while students in South Sumatra prayed for rain.

In the Philippines, Sen. Grace Poe declared her intention to run for president in next year’s elections, and Nepal celebrated a new constitution after a decade of political squabbling.

A North Korean traffic police woman in a white jacket saluted as vehicles drove past her, while Hindus in India marked the festival of the birth of Ganesh, the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.

At the Singapore Formula One Grand Prix, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany zoomed to victory.
